Fairysteps Birthday Shoes

Fairysteps Queenie

Happy Birthday to me! And what a perfect chilly-but-sunny day for frolicking in the grass wearing my new shoes. Aren’t they gorgeous?

These are Queenie shoes from Fairysteps, in pink dragon leather to match my beloved handbag. I may have put them on before I got out of bed this morning, to the accompaniment of rolled eyes from my husband. I don’t know why he expected anything less, to be honest!

There’s a silly story attached to these shoes.

A few months ago Ren made a pair of Puck shoes in this leather, and I wanted them very much indeed. Sadly I couldn’t afford them at the time, and another lucky person snapped them up. Because all Fairysteps shoes are limited editions (each hide is a finite size, and not all colours can be repeated) you have to buy them when you see them, otherwise they might not reappear! So when another pair magically appeared a few weeks later, happily coinciding with some money in my PayPal account, I gleefully snaffled them straight away.

When Paul came home from work I confessed that I’d bought the shoes, and he looked at me, paused and said “Oh, um…” at which point he was forced to reveal that he’d already bought this pair, and put them aside for my birthday! I quickly sent Ren a rather embarrassed email explaining the situation and, bless her, she was happy to refund me straight away. So a huge thank you to Ren, for sorting out our silliness!

I did feel a bit silly though, and spent a good while wondering whether I could possibly justify owning two almost-identical pairs of shoes… but now I can keep saving up for a pair of Mustardseed or Moonshine boots. I know that a pair of Moonshines are in progress, but it’s probably just as well that they’re not in my size! Maybe next year…

Paul’s been threatening me for weeks that he wasn’t actually going to give me the shoes for my birthday, he was going to put them away until Christmas. I’m so pleased he wasn’t cruel enough to actually do that, because I do love my new shoes! (And my handbag… and my purse… and my choker…)

It’s so lovely to be able to wear or use a well-made item that fills you with joy!
Soppy, perhaps, but true.

Social Suicide.

I wonder how many times I’m going to start a blog post with “my friend’s Patrick’s such a bad influence…”?

Yes, here I am again, showing you something that Patrick showed to me. I was musing about clothes for keeping cool in the summer, and he sent me the link to Social Suicide’s new “Holidaze” collection.

The jackets are lightweight denims and cottons, some striped like deckchairs. There’s an inside pocket big enough for a paperback, a metal-lined pocket to stop your phone from ringing, and a pocket for your sunglasses which is lined with microfibre to keep them clean. The linings are printed with game boards, so you can play chess, backgammon and even sudoku – if you can bring yourself to write on it!

If it gets too hot to wear a jacket at all, you can simply roll it up neatly inside its own sleeve – and a carrying strap magically appears. The numbers on the strap? That’s for you to keep score of your games, of course.

Intriguingly, each jacket has its own social networking profile:

…they are all members of Facebook: each jacket ships with a login and password and is, in turn, a member of a group. So all of our Summer collection of jackets are ‘friends’ on-line. Why? We’re not sure, but we’re hoping you’ll work something out!

Then, as I was wandering through the Social Suicide blog, I stumbled upon this little gem. Sharp suit? Check. Eyeliner? Check. Bright pink shoes? Check.

It’s official – Social Suicide are now on my wish list.

Patrick and I are just going to have to rob a bank (or win the lottery) before we go on our shopping spree.

Summer shoes

So, the weather’s just starting to get to the point where it might be warm enough to take off my Doc Martens, and start looking for some pretty shoes for the summer. A colleague came into work today wearing a pair of these. I was very well behaved, and didn’t wrestle her to the ground and steal them – if only because they would have been too small. (And I’d have been fired.) They’re from Shoon, and I find them sorely tempting. The double straps make them easy to fit, and that scalloped edging is the perfect detail.

The Inga from Sweden website reveals that the clogs come in eight different colours, but I haven’t yet managed to discover where I might be able to buy them in the UK – beyond the black ones that they have in Shoon.

I know I’ve written about my love for swedish clogs before, and seeing this pair in Schuh yesterday has definitely set it off again. The temptation to grab as many pairs as possible while they’re fleetingly fashionable is very strong.

Originally I’d planned to buy these lovely pink comfortable summer shoes from Clarks. Unfortunately for them, the customer service in my local branch was so poor that I left without buying them. I’m still vaguely thinking about buying them online, but I’m very torn now between these and the clogs.

My favourite time of year.

2009 Doc Martens!

You may have gathered that this is my favourite time of year not because we’ve finally had a whole afternoon of unbroken sunshine – but because the new styles of winter boots are just starting to appear in the shops!

OH MY GOODNESS, PINK PATENT TARTAN DOC MARTENS. *faints with joy*
Mind you, I do already have a pair of bright pink patent Doc Martens, so maybe two pairs would be overkill…?

I’m not sure why I’ve accidentally fallen in love with these silver ones. They look like robot boots! I think they are probably the shiniest boots I’ve ever seen. And we all know that I just can’t help being drawn to shiny things!

I used to have a 20-hole pair of DMs, but they became too small when I had to start wearing orthotics. What I really want is a patent pair with a zip, but the only place I can find them in my size (UK6) is Zappos, and they’ve suspended their international shipping service for the time being. 🙁

The wingtip style are also from Zappos, and I deliberated about them for so long that they’ve sold out in my size. If I’d bought them when I first saw them, I could have had them shipped over from the US and been wearing them right now! But now it’s too late.

Every time I look at new boots it makes me deeply regret selling my Doc Martens collection. I got rid of them on the advice of a podiatrist, who I’m now fairly certain was trying to sell me some of his own very expensive shoes instead. Despite all my foot and hip problems, these three styles of Doc Martens remain the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn.

Vivienne Westwood Hammer Head shoes…

Yes, I know – yet another pair of pink shoes that I can’t wear!

These are by Vivienne Westwood, her men’s Hammer Head style in bright pink. I first saw these in a magazine advert, and scoured the internet to find a place where I could buy them.

As always with men’s shoes, they’re not available in my size. But if you’re a UK size 7-10, you can buy them from Hervia. Even better – they’re in the sale!

Oh Topshop, how I love thee…

These are Topshop’s “Kameryn” brogues. The pink and black pair have now been moved into their “last chance to buy” section, and in their place the silver, white and pink ones have arrived!

Now I just need to save up £64, and these little beauties can be mine…

More pink brogues!

This month’s Elle magazine comes with a £15 gift card for Kurt Geiger.

Ten lucky winners will have a card worth £1000. Sadly I’m not one of them, or this would have been a much more extravagant post! The catch is that you have to sign over your contact details to both Elle and Kurt Geiger in order to activate the card, presumably to be spammed in perpetuity. Very annoying.

I didn’t see anything I fancied (or could afford) on the Kurt Geiger site, but then I remembered that Elle had an article about wearing men’s clothes, which featured the beautiful shoes above! I definitely can’t afford these, but even if I could, I’ve fallen down the hole of being just one size too small in the feet to be able to wear men’s shoes.

The minute you see a pair of pink suede brogues in a 39, you’ll let me know, right?
