Slevectomy

Okay, I admit it, I made that word up.

When Laura came to try on her mock-up, we ummed and aahed about the sleeves, but decided to go for it, and see what happened. As it turned out, Laura preferred the dress without the sleeves, so this morning I chopped them off!

Laura's dress - now sleeveless

There, that’s better.

Laura also sent me details for the perfect pendant she’s found to wear with the dress:

She’s had it made by the Etsy seller Jochris12, who does beautiful glass work.

I’m finding it very exciting that more and more people are getting into the spirit of buying and commissioning hand-made and one-off items, rather than simply dashing down to the high street shops. Hopefully this means I’ll be kept nice and busy!

Vogue 8470 – Finished!

This is Vogue 8470.

The outer layer is a sheer black georgette, flatlined to a layer of red faux habutae. The midriff panel is a printed crepe, and the bodice and skirt are lined with the red. The sleeves are a single layer of georgette.

There’s also a matching sash in the printed crepe, but I forgot to take a picture of that before I parcelled everything up to go off to Laura!

This dress has been something of a learning curve for me, as I don’t normally work with fabrics which are as slippery as crepe and georgette.

I’m pleased with the results, and I can’t wait to see pictures of the dress being worn, but I don’t know that I’ll be rushing to work with these types of fabric again.

Fits and Starts

I seem to have been working on this toile for absolutely ages.

It’s not that it’s a particularly difficult pattern (it’s one of Vogue’s Easy Options range), just that I’ve been a bit unwell again recently, and every time I tried to work on this toile I’d have to stop because I was feeling too poorly to sew without risk of mucking it up.

Thankfully it’s all come together now, and is ready and waiting to be tried on in a couple of weeks’ time.

Laura's toile

The pattern is Vogue 8470, and the finished version is going to be in black and red. The top layer will be a black georgette (plain or with tiny flocked spots, we haven’t decided yet), with a red satin lining showing through underneath.

In white like this though (at least before I added the sleeves!) it has a definite hint of the Marilyn Monroe about it. I think this is going to make a really lovely party dress.

So much so in fact, that I think this pattern is going to be a definite contender for my wedding dress.
