The Devil’s In the Details.

Earlier this year, Paul and I got engaged. Presumably this means that at some point in the future there will be a wedding. So, of course, I did what any ridiculously addicted freshly engaged woman would do – I went shoe shopping.

I saw a pair of shoes, by Irregular Choice. I saw them on the Schuh website, and I went into my local branch to try them on. Two weeks later, after I’d been paid, I went back to buy the shoes. And they’d gone. No longer for sale in the shop, no longer online.

(I may have said a rude word. A nice man is trying to mail order a pair for me. He’ll let me know.)

This evening I was browsing on Amazon, when I remembered that they sell shoes too! I had a little look, and I found what I thought were the shoes I was coveting. Then I looked a little closer, and realised that whilst they looked a bit like my shoes, they weren’t my shoes at all.

The shoes at the top are the ones that I’m coveting. (I couldn’t find pictures of the cream and gold, so I’m showing you the red in both styles, for a more accurate comparison.)

See how the toes are extremely pointy, and the strap is quite low down?
See how the heels are higher, and more shapely, and self-covered?
See how the suede is different?

These are, quite emphatically, not the same shoes.

Yet they’re made by the same company, at the same price, and sold under the same name. How peculiar.

I’m sure that plenty of people will be looking at the picture and wondering what on earth I’m fussing about. Yes, the shoes are very similar. But to me (and I realise this is merely a matter of opinion), the top shoes look glamorous and elegant and sumptuous and lovely. The others look somehow mediocre and cheap.

If I hadn’t seen the top shoes first, would I be coveting the others? It’s impossible to say. But I know that if I can get a pair of the cream and gold ones by mail order, if they’re the same style as the bottom pair, I’m sending them back.

Happy Day After Valentine’s Day!

After an unprecedented amount of secrecy from my former boyfriend…

…he is now no longer my boyfriend, but my fiancé!

I have a pretty, sparkly ring, and at some point in the future I will need to think about making myself a wedding dress.

Oh my goodness though… so many styles… so much beautiful fabric… (so many shoes…) and only one wedding!* How am I ever going to choose?

Still, we’re not planning on doing the wedding part any time soon, so at least I can take as long as I want to think about it.

My current thoughts are straying towards this Vintage Vogue 1957 dress, or maybe this Butterick one, in the beautiful silk we had delivered to work yesterday. It’s lime green, shot with pink.

I can’t imagine anyone else (i.e. Paul) being too thrilled by a lime green and magenta wedding though, so perhaps I’d better think again!

*Okay, this will be my second wedding. But beautiful as my first dress was, I think it might be considered slightly inappropriate to wear it again! 😉

One down, four to go…

Recently I have been mostly making itty bitty things for my sister’s wedding, which is rapidly approaching. I say “itty bitty” in the sense that these things are not enormous great bridesmaids’ dresses, but I swear it would have been quicker to make a bunch of dresses than these cravats!

They need such a lot of hand-sewing that they take a really long time to put together. I’m really pleased with the way this first one looks though – now I just need to add the knots to the remaining four. (And make five matching pocket hankies. And get them back to my sister.)

I’ve also been helping out with some jewellery and hair accessories. The little green chiffon flowers were originally brooches. Two of them are now on snappy hair clips (as modelled!), and one is on an elastic bobble.

The diamante bracelet just needed a new clasp, and the little sparkly petal bracelet had to be shortened to make it fit a four-year-old.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be making the alterations to my bridesmaid’s dress (it’s this one, but I’ll be adding spaghetti straps), and then we’ll be good to go!

New job, new skirt…

I haven’t posted anything for a while, so I thought it was about time I showed you what I’ve been up to!

I’m working on some cravats for my sister’s wedding, although I don’t have any photographs of those yet. I need a stylistic opinion from my sister before I can complete them. I have to say that they are quite possibly the fiddliest thing I have ever made, and I’m having to do them in stages so that they don’t make me cross-eyed and drive me crazy. Still, I’m seeing my sister in a week’s time, so as soon as she’s seen how they’ll fit together I can finish them off.

You may have gathered from the title of the post that I have a new job! As of Tuesday I’m going to be working with my partner, , as a part-time web content manager. I’ll still be working at the bookshop until my notice period is up, so I’m just about to embark on a very busy four weeks! If you don’t hear from me, please don’t panic. I’ll be checking my journal and my email as often as I can, and I’ll be able to catch up with everything properly at the beginning of September.

This is the skirt that I’ve made to wear on my first day at work:

Yoda a-line skirt

I have a bet with that nobody will even notice that it has Yoda all over it until at least lunchtime. He thinks all the geeks my new colleagues will notice straight away. We’ll see… 😉

It’s made from cotton flannel and fully lined, so it’s not really a summer skirt. I’ll be working in an air-conditioned office though, so I’m sure it’ll be okay.
