Giant Moss Stitch Scarf

Moss Stitch Scarf

This is another super-simple scarf that looks great and is incredibly warm and cosy!

You’ll need:

  • 2 x 100g (80m) Rowan Big wool
  • 2 x 50g (100m) Noro; Kureyon or Silk Garden would work well
(I used Blossom, but it had been in my stash for so long that it’s now been discontinued.)
  • 1 pair 15mm knitting needles
What you do:
  • Cast on 11 stitches (or more if you want your scarf to be wider but shorter, but always an odd number)
  • Work in moss/seed stitch (k1, p1 to end, the same every row) until your scarf is long enough or you’ve run out of Big Wool)
  • Cast off and weave in ends
  • Wrap your remaining Noro around a DVD case, lengthways, and cut at one end.
  • Loop these strands of yarn through the ends of your scarf to make tassels

The Noro will show up as subtle stripes against your background colour, and your scarf should end up about 260cm long, not including the tassels.

Just a little warning: I’m about 5’5″ tall, and this scarf touches the floor on both sides if I don’t wrap it around my neck. If this is going to drive you crazy or trip you up, I’d suggest making your scarf a little shorter!

I wanted to use up every last inch of yarn, and I like the Doctor Who effect, so I’m really enjoying the fact that my scarf’s ridiculously long.

Added bonus: because the yarn’s so thick and you’re working on such large needles, this scarf knits up in no time at all. I worked on mine over two evenings, and it was finished just in time for snow!

All of these tutorials and downloads are completely free for you to use and print! They do take time and resources to put together though, so if you wanted to pop a few pennies in my PayPal tip jar or buy Miss Mouse a coffee by way of a thank you, I’d be very grateful.
