Here’s a quick tutorial for making a flower brooch using Suffolk Puff (yo-yo) techniques.
Using a CD as a template, cut out 6 circles of fabric to make your petals.
Fold your circles in half, and lightly crease the fold with your fingers.
Gather the raw edges of the first petal.
Gather each petal onto the thread in the same way.
Continue until all your petals are gathered onto the thread, then join the first petal to the last to make a complete circle.
Cut 6 more circles, to make your leaves. Fold each circle into quarters, and gather the raw edges in the same way as the petals.
Lay the leaves underneath the petals, and make sure they show through the gaps. Adjust the gathering as necessary, and join the two ends to make a complete circle of leaves.
Sew the two layers together.
Turn the flower over, and sew a circle of felt to cover the hole.
From the front, stuff the hole with a bit of toy stuffing or some scraps of fabric.
Sew on a large button to make the centre of the flower.
Sew a pin to the felt circle on the back of the flower.
Your finished flower will be about the same size as your CD template!
(For a smaller brooch, start with a smaller circle for the leaves and petals.)
Ta-daa!
All of these tutorials and downloads are completely free for you to use and print! They do take time and resources to put together though, so if you wanted to pop a few pennies in my PayPal tip jar or buy Miss Mouse a coffee by way of a thank you, I’d be very grateful.
