Heatwave.

At the risk of sounding like a miserable old so-and-so, I am really not enjoying this heatwave! My Shed is like a sauna, and switching on the fan only serves to move the too-hot air around a bit. I went outside to stand in a shady spot in the garden, and caught sight of these [...]

Marwell Zoo

When we got up yesterday morning, Paul said “let’s go to the zoo”. So, we bundled the cameras into the car and headed off to Marwell. It was a scorchingly hot day, so most of the animals were doing the sensible thing and hanging out quietly in the shade. Unfortunately for us, this meant that [...]

Stag Beetle Season

I’ve been AWOL for a few days now – sorry about that. I had a very busy start to the week, followed by an extremely unexpected trip to hospital! I haven’t been up to anything much for the past day or so except for sleeping, so I hereby present a picture of a beautiful stag [...]

Strange bird behaviour?

Red Kites are pretty common where I live. Thanks to their reintroduction into the area around the M40, I see them circling above my neighbourhood every day. I’ve seen the kites being mobbed by gangs of crows before now – especially at the time of year when there are eggs and chicks for the crows [...]

Springwatch

Apparently I now have some kind of Pavlovian reaction to the sound of tweeting. Every time I hear a bird, I grab the camera. This one was snapped through the window, with the 200mm lens. (Hence the distance and the graininess.) Still cute though! It’s a baby Great Tit. They fledged last week, in the [...]

Painted Lady

I don’t do very well in the summer. I suffer from heatstroke, I burn easily, and I find it very difficult to function once the weather starts to heat up. I spent most of today hiding in my Shed, sorting out another pile of patterns and fabrics to go on Ebay. (I’ll be listing them [...]

Getting rid of the spiders.

Apparently it’s spider season. One of the hazards of working in a wooden building at the bottom of the garden is that spiders like to share that building with you. I’m not the biggest fan of spiders, so I was very glad to spot this magpie taking care of one for me!

Full of beans. (And peas.)

Yesterday I was bemoaning the irony of having watered my potted vegetable plot, mere minutes before it started to rain. This little pea plant’s about three inches tall, and seems to be quite efficient at collecting all those tiny little drops! This morning I was feeling thoroughly miserable and germy and sorry for myself, and [...]

Meeting Sheep.

Paul and I spent the weekend in Derbyshire, discussing wedding cake with my Aunt. Helen runs a lovely B&B in Hartington, so we had the perfect base to do some walking and sightseeing. Being the lambing season, what we saw most of were sheep!

Lots of goslings.

Paul and I spent the morning wandering round Whiteknights Lake. I haven’t been there for a long time – probably not since I stopped working at the Library, and certainly not since I moved house about five years ago. It’s a perfect time of year – we saw lots of goslings, lots of baby coots [...]
